John Hampton, Editor-in-Chief of the Marshfield Times at Marshfield High School in Coos Bay, has been chosen as the 2015 winner of the Oregon High School Journalist of the Year award. As the Oregon winner, Hampton is eligible for the National High School Journalist of the Year award made by the Journalism Education Association.
Hampton has been a member of the Marshfield Times for four years. During that time, his layouts were awarded Best in Category in the state Media Olympics, received a fifth place finish in the national NSPA Design of the Year contest and have been featured in NSPA’s Best of the Press book twice. The Marshfield Times was a Pacemaker finalist three times during Hampton’s time on staff and a Pacemaker winner his junior year.
Hampton is also an accomplished writer. He has interviewed Oregon Senator Ron Wyden as well as University of Oregon head football coach (and Marshfield graduate) Mark Helfrich. His work has been published in his hometown newspaper, The World.
The Oregon High School Journalist of the Year is co-sponsored by the Oregon Journalism Education Association and Northwest Scholastic Press Association. Hampton will be awarded the Alyce Sheetz Memorial Scholarship for $1,000.
